If we want to talk about the history and founding of the museum, we have to name two Czechs, Herman and Carl Scorpil. The influence of the two brothers on Varna’s culture and enlightenment cannot be overlooked. Guided by the two brothers, a group of prominent people and teachers came together to form the Varna Archaeological Association. The purpose of the forum was to inform the community about the history and culture of Varna and northern Bulgaria.

It was the first year that the museum was exhibited, and Karl Scorpil was in charge of the museum, but after his death the archaeological museum became part of government property. The Varna Museum of Archeology remained in the same building for three years until it moved to a new building.

Museum building
The museum building was originally designed and built for girls’ high schools and has a neuroscience style. The building consists of a ground floor and two floors. The building is a complete square and contains large courtyards. Some of the rooms and hallways of the building are decorated with beautiful murals. There are corridors around the building that connect the rooms to each other. The museum also has a children’s library and educational section.

As we said, most of the museum’s fame is due to a collection that is said to be the oldest gold treasure in the world. This collection is of great interest both to tourists and to scientists and archaeologists, dating back to 5 BC. This treasure consists of 2 gold objects weighing about 1.5 kg. One of the most interesting objects in the collection is a golden cane that symbolizes royal power. These objects are derived from a series of pre-historic graves dating from 1 to 5 BC.

The collection was discovered at the Necropolis Archaeological Site west of Varna. The interesting thing about this area is that it was discovered by accident, but soon everyone realized that a huge collection of valuable historical finds had been buried in the area. In Necropolis a total of 5 ancient tombs were discovered, each containing a unique collection of gold objects, pottery, personal belongings, and so on. The interesting thing is that there were no skeletons in all the graves and some of the graves were just full of gifts for the dead. These symbolic graves were full of precious objects, and many golden objects were discovered in these graves.

At that time, there were complex beliefs about death that can be found in the gifts and valuables buried with the dead. One of the interesting things about the Necropolis archaeological site is the discovery of the first signs of a man’s choice and burial (it is said that the end of the fifth millennium BC was the beginning of male domination in Europe).
